The full League season got underway on Saturday with several matches in each Division. In Division 1, four teams took maximum points. Bunwell in their first match in the top Division sprung a surprise with a 4-1 win at last season’s runners up, Bridgham Utd. Gressenhall also had a good start, winning 6-2 at Cockers. Dereham Town A got down to business with a 4-1 home win over Hingham Athletic while Rockland Utd. will be pleased with their odd goal of three win at Narborough.
In Division 2, the promoted teams generally found it hard going with the only exception being Sporle who beat Hingham Athletic Res. 4-3. Hethersett Athletic were beaten 1-0 at home by Morley Village, Castle Acre Swifts went down by the odd goal of three at Nostro and Wymondham Town A and Northwold S&SC shared the spoils from a 1-1 draw. There was a good start for relegated Yaxham who beat West End 5-3. The other match between Necton and Feltwell Utd. was abandoned with about 20 minutes to go because of a serious injury to a Necton player.
One of the promoted teams to Division 3 made a good start with Stoke Ferry beating last season’s Division 4 champions, Splitz Utd., 6-1. Methwold Rovers were not so fortunate, being beaten 5-2 at Bawdeswell and Narborough Res. also lost, going down 6-0 at Wendling. League newcomers Marham Wanderers enjoyed a fruitful start with a 7-1 home win over Great Cressingham.
In Division 4, there were mixed fortunes for some of the other League newcomers. Mulbarton Wanderers Res. beat Tugas Utd. 2-1 and Mattishall A beat Scarning Utd. by the odd goal of five. North Elmham Res. ran up the highest score of the day in thrashing Dereham Cockers Utd. 18-0 and Nostro Res. were beaten 5-2 at Colkirk. Shropham Utd. Res. got off to a bright start with a 7-0 home victory over Weasenham Wanderers, scoring some excellent goals in the process.
